My name is Otilia Sorto Fuentes, I was born in the small town of Corinto in the department of Morazan, El Salvador. My father was a farmer, and my mother a housewife; the atmosphere in the family was very religious.
My mother chose the name Otilia for me, and my father officially registered me with it. This name helped to create the foundation of my spiritual life. You see, the name Otilia is associated with a woman that lived her life, in holiness, helping others.
When I was growing up, my mother told me the story of why she chose that name for me, and also how important it was to help others.
My life helping others began when I was 15 years old; with the help of a friend, I started to help a local priest teach bible class. During my first time helping, we managed to get 55 children out of 99 who received catechism to make their first communion. My journey to help others had begun.
What I like most is helping people who are sick, the elderly, children, and mothers who are pregnant.
The mercy of God has always been with me. In 1986, I met Mother Teresa of Calcutta and received a blessing from her; for me, it was an event that strengthened my desire to give my life to the service of others.
Otilia Sorto Fuentes.
